Drawn from the high ground of Staten Island, this lithograph spreads the harbor across the sheet, with Brooklyn, Jersey City and the crowded waterfront of Manhattan laid out beyond the water. C.W. Burton drew the view directly on stone, and the New York firm of Sarony & Major printed it around 1849, a time when lithography was a popular way to produce large city views. The tint added to the impression gives the sheet its soft color. The date and attribution come from an older catalog card and have not been independently verified, so the year should be read as approximate.
