Drawn on the spot by Capt. Thomas Howdell of the Royal Artillery, this etching shows New York from the southwest, a vantage that puts the harbor and waterfront at the center rather than the city's inland streets. The London publisher Thomas Jefferys issued it in 1768, and the engraver P. Canot turned Howdell's sketch into the finished plate. Views like this were prized in Britain as firsthand records of colonial America, and the print appeared only a few years before the disputes that led to the Revolution.
