Among the views in *The Atlantic Neptune*, this print is distinguished by its lighthouse on Sandy Hook, New Jersey, a landmark that guided ships approaching New York Harbor. Joseph F. W. des Barres, a surveyor in the Royal Navy, produced the atlas for naval use during the American Revolution, and this aquatint with etching shows the shoreline as a mariner would have seen it from offshore. The coasts of Long Island and Staten Island appear alongside the lighthouse, so the sheet reads as a navigational aid as much as a picture. Published in London in 1777, when British forces held New York City, it reflects the military interest in controlling and charting the approaches to the port.
