Titled "Sunday in Yokohama: Russians Enjoying Themselves," this 1861 woodcut shows foreign visitors at leisure among townspeople, with men, children and sightseers gathered around them. Yokohama had opened to foreign trade only in 1859, and its newly arrived Western residents drew close attention from Japanese print artists. The design is signed Gountei Sadahide, the name used by Utagawa Sadahide, a prolific chronicler of the port, and the blocks are credited to the engraver Koizumi Minokichi. Prints like this record everyday contact between foreigners and locals in the settlement's early years.
