Foreigners strolling and riding through Yokohama on a day off give this print its focus, with its attention on American residents and their carriages and dogs rather than on Japanese townsfolk. The print is signed Gountei Sadahide, a pseudonym of the ukiyo-e artist Utagawa Sadahide, and its seal date places it in 1861, only a couple of years after Yokohama opened to foreign trade under the 1858 treaties. Such scenes of the new treaty port were popular with Edo-period buyers, who were curious about the foreign community that had settled on the Yokohama bluff.
