Set in 1863, this woodcut focuses on American visitors and the clothing that set them apart from the Japanese people around them. The print is signed by the artist Utagawa Yoshitora and published by Yamashiroya Jinbei, and its subject is a conversation involving the Americans. It appeared a few years after Japan opened its ports to foreign trade under the 1858 treaties, when foreigners were a new and much-discussed presence. Prints like this were popular with urban buyers curious about the newcomers, so they reveal as much about Japanese fascination with foreigners as about the visitors themselves.
