The title names an American holding a child, and the subject headings add a mother, household servants, and foreign dress, so the print shows a Western household as Japanese artists saw it. It was published in 1860 by Kiku Ii (Kiya Ichibei) and designed by Ichiryūsai Yoshitoyo, and the record attributes the carving to Koizumi Hori Kane. Prints like this belong to the yokohama-e tradition, which grew up after Japan opened the port of Yokohama to foreign residents in 1859. Such pictures were popular with buyers curious about the newcomers, and their details of clothing and daily life are often their most useful feature today.
