This print's title, *Amerikajin no zu* (Portrait of Americans), sets it apart from many foreigner pictures of the period by focusing on an American family, with the subject tags noting a mother breastfeeding. It dates to 1861, a few years after Japan opened ports such as Yokohama to foreign trade and residence, when Japanese printmakers produced a steady stream of images of unfamiliar newcomers. The design bears the signature of Yoshitora, a prominent ukiyo-e artist known for these pictures, and the woodcut was carved and printed by Koizumi Minokichi. Prints like this one offer a view of how Japanese artists and audiences pictured Westerners in the years just after the ports opened.
