Bread is what sets this sheet apart. Its title, *Amerikajin no zu*, pairs Americans with a bread oven, and the scene shows foreigners baking in a domestic setting. The print dates to 1861, a few years after Yokohama opened to foreign trade in 1859, when a small foreign community lived in a separate settlement and Japanese printmakers produced many images of their unfamiliar habits. The signature reads Yoshikazu, and the cock-year seal date places the work in 1861. It is a useful record of how early Yokohama prints presented foreign domestic life to Japanese buyers.
