Rather than landmarks, this sheet shows Americans themselves, as Japanese viewers saw them in Yokohama in 1861. The title, *Yokohama meisho benten*, promises famous local sights, but the subject is the foreign residents and visitors who arrived after the port opened to trade in 1859. Their Western clothing and dress drew the eye of printmakers working in the late Edo period, and the seal date, which refers to the cock year, places the sheet in the early years of the Yokohama-e style. The Library of Congress holds it as part of Mrs. E. Crane Chadbourne's 1930 gift of Japanese prints.
