Takanawa, a seaside district along the old Tokaido road south of central Edo, is the place shown here, with the sheets focused on the shoreline at sunrise or sunset. The record also notes boats and carts on the water. Issued in 1870, early in the Meiji period, the print belongs to a series of famous places that reworked familiar Edo views for a city now called Tokyo. The record credits several artists, including Toyohara Kunichika, and the three-sheet design was printed from woodblocks in color.
