Takanawa, a post town on the old Tokaido road at the edge of Tokyo, is the setting here, where a crowd gathers around an assortment of carriages, rickshaws and other conveyances. Rickshaws had only recently spread through the capital by 1871, and the catalog also lists a railroad, a sign of the new transport the artist wanted to show. The Shimbashi to Yokohama line opened the following year, in 1872. The triptych was designed by Ichiyōsai Kuniteru II, and the engraving is credited to Koizumi Minokichi. The left sheet is missing from this set.
