Foreign officials traveling through Yokohama by carriage is the subject here, a sight that would have been new to most Japanese viewers in 1860. The port had opened to foreign trade only a year earlier, following the 1858 treaties, and the foreign settlement along the bay quickly became a place where diplomats, merchants and residents were a daily presence. Issen Yoshikazu designed the picture and Koizumi Minokichi cut the woodblocks, part of a wave of Yokohama views that showed the newcomers and their vehicles to audiences across Japan. The detail in the dress, the carriages and the streetscape is the main thing worth studying.
