Two foreign men sit together at a table, one eating and drinking while the other talks, in this 1861 color woodcut from a series on "People from Foreign Lands." The title pairs a Chinese figure with a French one, which reflects how Japanese print makers of the time lumped newly arrived Westerners and Asian traders together as curiosities. The design is by Ikkeisai Yoshiiku, a prolific artist of the Yokohama print trade, and it was carved and printed with the help of the engraver Koizumi Minokichi. Yokohama had opened to foreign residents only in 1859, so prints like this one gave Japanese buyers an early look at the people living in the port's new foreign settlement.
