Among the foreign-themed prints of its day, this sheet stands out for its focus on South America, which the Japanese title "Minami Amerika" names directly. Dated 1861 and signed by the designer Yoshitora, it belongs to a popular series that appeared after Japan opened its ports to foreign trade in the 1850s, when curiosity about visitors and distant lands ran high. The record credits the writer Kanagaki Robun and the carver Matsushima Seikichi, reflecting the collaboration typical of Edo-period woodblock publishing. Its subject headings point to clothing and dress, which makes it useful for seeing how Japanese artists imagined foreign fashions at the time.
