This print shows an American man in Western dress, and its Japanese title, *Amerika*, is written beside him. The cock seal dates it to 1861, two years after Yokohama opened to foreign trade in 1859, when Japanese woodblock publishers began turning out pictures of Westerners for a curious public. Such images, known as *gaikoku-e* or prints of foreign people, offered viewers an early and often exaggerated look at unfamiliar clothing and faces. The Library of Congress holds two copies in different color schemes, which shows how a single design could be printed and recolored.
