A woman in a riding habit, seated sidesaddle on a horse, sets this sheet apart from the other figures in the *Gaikoku jinbutsu zukushi* series, which portrays foreigners in Japan. The series appeared in the early 1860s, after the treaty ports opened to foreign trade in 1859, when buyers were eager for pictures of the newcomers. The signature is Yoshitora's and the engraving is credited to Hori Take, which reflects the teamwork typical of Japanese woodblock print workshops of the period.
