Two foreign women in Western dress stand at the center of this print, one identified in the title as Russian and the other as American. The series title, *Gaikoku jinbutsu zuga* (Portraits of foreigners), points to the wave of woodblock prints that appeared after Japan opened its ports to foreign trade in 1859. Such images gave buyers a close look at the unfamiliar clothing, hairstyles and manners of visitors from abroad. The print is attributed in its record to Ikkeisai Yoshiiku, a pupil of Utagawa Kuniyoshi, and the seal date corresponds to 1861, when the designs were a popular and fashionable novelty.
