An Englishman, rendered in the Japanese title as *Igirisu*, is the figure this sheet singles out from the wider *Gaikoku jinbutsu zukushi* ("People from foreign lands") series. The subject headings point to foreign dress and to soldiers, so the figure likely stands for the military men and visitors who arrived after Japan opened its ports in the late 1850s. The sheet was designed by Utagawa Yoshitora and cut by the engraver Matsushima Seikichi, with text attributed to the writer Kanagaki Robun, who later became known for his popular Meiji-era books. Its seal date places it in 1860, a time when such prints gave urban audiences a curious, sometimes comic, view of newcomers.
