This print shows an American rendered as a rider and smoker, two activities the subject tags single out for the 1860s. Its signature names the artist Utagawa Yoshitora, and the record credits Matsushima Seikichi with the carving and Kanagaki Robun, the writer known for Yokohama-era satire, with the series text. After the port of Yokohama opened to foreign trade in 1859, Japanese woodblock makers produced many sheets like this one, which sold to a curious public eager to see newcomers from abroad. The series mixes observation with exaggeration, so the figure's posture and dress are worth reading as a Japanese view of Western habits rather than a literal record.
