Among the foreigners pictured in the *Gaikoku jinbutsu zukushi*, or *People from Foreign Lands*, series, this sheet shows an American officer in military dress, as the subject headings for uniforms of the 1860s confirm. The signature identifies the designer as Yoshitora, an artist of the Utagawa school, while the engraving is credited to Koizumi Minokichi and the printing to Shiba Jyakuyo. Dated 1861, only a few years after American traders and diplomats began working in the newly opened port towns, such prints answered a strong public curiosity about the newcomers and their unfamiliar clothing and manners.
