Showing Russians at music is what sets this sheet apart from the rest of its series, as the subject headings note. It belongs to a set titled *Pictures of People from Foreign Lands*, and its seal date, Monkey 12, corresponds to 1860. By then Japan had opened several ports to Western trade, and Japanese artists produced many images of foreign residents in places like Nagasaki and Yokohama. Prints like this one show how Japanese viewers first pictured Russians: strangers in unfamiliar dress whose appearance drew as much curiosity as their business.
