Most prints of this subject show Japanese adults or city life, but this one turns to foreign children at their games, which makes it an unusual pairing of subject and style. It bears the signature "Issen Yoshikazu," and the woodblock was cut by Koizumi Minokichi, a carver of the period. The year 1860 falls just after Japan opened several ports to foreign trade in 1859, when curiosity about the newcomers fueled a popular market for pictures of foreigners in Japan. Prints like this one offer a glimpse of how Japanese artists and buyers imagined these unfamiliar visitors at play.
