Rather than Japanese children at their usual games, this print shows foreign boys and girls skipping rope and walking on stilts, activities that the subject headings of the record also name. It belongs to the Yokohama-e genre, which flourished after the port opened to foreign trade in 1859 and the new foreign community in Yokohama drew the curiosity of local artists and buyers. The design is credited to Issen Yoshikazu, and the color woodcut was engraved by Koizumi Minokichi. Images like this record a moment when Japanese viewers were first seeing Western residents up close.
