This three-panel woodcut, titled *Yokohama gaikokujin gyoretsu no zu* ("Picture of Foreign Parade in Yokohama"), shows foreigners marching through the port in a procession. It dates to 1861, only two years after Yokohama opened to foreign trade under the 1858 treaties, when the city was becoming a strange new meeting ground for Japanese and Western residents. Prints like this one, known as Yokohama-e, were sold to a curious public eager to see these unfamiliar visitors, their uniforms, and their customs. The triptych format lets the procession unfold across the full width of the sheet.
