Set in a foreign trading house in Yokohama, this woodcut shows a parlour arranged in the foreign manner, with the foreign visitors and residents who spent their time there. It dates to 1861, only a few years after Yokohama opened to foreign trade under the 1858 treaties, when Japanese artists were eager to record the unfamiliar habits of the newcomers. The print is signed by Gountei Sadahide, and the record credits Kanagaki Robun, who later became a well-known writer of comic fiction. Only the two side sheets survive, so the central section of this triptych is missing and the scene is seen only in part.
