Foreign merchants gathered around a table in a Yokohama trading house to draw up a contract, and inscriptions identifying the men as Dutch and German point to the mix of nationalities that came to the port after it opened to foreign trade in 1859. The design is signed by Gountei Sadahide, the name used by the Edo-period printmaker Utagawa Sadahide, who became a leading chronicler of Yokohama's foreign community, and the sheet is dated 1861. Take note of the setting and the figures' clothing, which reflect the cultural mixing that treaty-port prints often recorded.
