Rather than a street view or a harbor scene, this print steps indoors to a kitchen and lodging house in Yokohama's foreign settlement, where cooking and daily household routines for foreign residents and guests are on display. Yokohama opened as a treaty port in 1859, and its foreign quarter grew quickly as merchants and their households arrived, so scenes like this one recorded a new way of living that Japanese woodblock artists found endlessly interesting. The print bears the signature of Issen Yoshikazu, and the record credits the engraving to Matsushima Seikichi, with Hori Chō also attributed.
