This print shows a kitchen inside a foreign settlement house in Yokohama, a subject that was new to Japanese printmakers in 1860. The port had opened to foreign traders only the year before, and Yokohama's foreign residents drew the attention of Japanese artists who produced a steady stream of prints about their homes, clothing and habits. The design bears the signature of Issen Yoshikazu, and the woodblock was cut by Matsushima Seikichi. Prints like this one are valued as a record of how Japanese viewers saw the unfamiliar daily life of Westerners living just outside their own city.
