Printed across three sheets to form one wide scene, this woodcut shows a foreign trading house in Yokohama, a port that had only opened to international trade in 1859. The design is by Gountei Sadahide, an Edo-based artist known for his views of the new foreign settlements, and it was cut by the engraver Matsushima Seikichi. Catalogers tag the scene with foreign visitors, geishas, courtesans, food and drink, and lodging, which points to the mix of commerce and leisure that drew people to the foreign quarter. Prints like this sold well to Japanese buyers curious about the newcomers, and today they preserve a vivid record of that brief period of cultural contact.
