Unlike most Yokohama views of the period, this print turns indoors to show a dinner at a foreign trading house, with the guests and servants identified by written labels as English, Chinese, and Siamese. Yokohama had opened to foreign trade only in 1859, and its merchants and their households were a novelty to Japanese viewers. Artists such as Utagawa Sadahide, who signed this sheet as Gountei Sadahide, recorded such scenes for a curious public. The color woodcut was also the work of several hands, with the engraving attributed to Matsushima Seikichi, a reminder of how many craftsmen went into a single sheet.
