Few Yokohama prints show a scene as specific as this two-sheet diptych, which depicts foreign visitors at a banquet in the port city, with inscriptions in American, Russian, Dutch and English. Yokohama had opened to foreign trade only a few years before 1861, and printmakers quickly turned its newcomers, merchants and diplomats into a popular genre of "Yokohama pictures" that showed Japanese audiences these unfamiliar guests and their habits. The sheets are signed by Utagawa Yoshikazu, and the record also credits the engraving to Hori Sen, a reminder that a single woodblock print passed through several skilled hands.
