Set in the Gankiro teahouse in Yokohama, this three-sheet woodcut triptych shows foreign visitors and courtesans at a party, with the title "Five Nations" pointing to the mix of nationalities in the room. Ikkeisai Yoshiiku designed the scene in 1860, a few years after Yokohama opened to foreign trade in 1859, when the new port drew a steady stream of Western merchants, sailors and curious onlookers. Matsushima Seikichi is credited as engraver, and the print's color and lively crowding make it a useful record of how the foreign presence was pictured in Japanese popular prints of the period.
