This triptych shows a drinking party at a Yokohama teahouse, with its title naming the "Five Countries," a term for the foreign nations that had recently begun trading at the port. Yokohama opened to foreign trade in 1859, and prints like this one recorded the new mix of foreign visitors, courtesans, and local entertainment that grew up around the settlement. The print is signed by the ukiyo-e artist Ikkeisai Yoshiiku, who was known for scenes of foreigners in Japan, and the record credits the woodcut engraving to Hori Take. Its three sheets are matted together, so the scene reads as one continuous view across the full width.
