Foreign performers are the focus of this woodcut, which shows a circus staged in Yokohama, a port that had opened to foreign trade only in 1859. Issen Yoshikazu, a pupil of the prolific Utagawa Kuniyoshi, signed the print, and its seal date places it in 1864. Prints like this recorded the novelty of acrobats and riders from abroad, whose shows likely drew both Japanese onlookers and the foreign residents of the new settlement. The wide horizontal sheet gives room to take in the performers and the spectators around them.
