A foreign woman riding sidesaddle in Western dress is the detail that sets this print apart from the usual scenes of street life. It comes from the series *Gokakoku no uchi* (People of the Five Nations), in which the artist Yoshitora depicted foreigners who arrived in Japan after the treaty ports opened in the late 1850s. The record credits the writer Kanagaki Robun, later known for his comic fiction, and the engraver Matsushima Seikichi. Prints like this offered Japanese viewers a close, often curious look at unfamiliar clothing and customs.
