A Russian officer on horseback anchors this sheet from the *Gokakoku no uchi*, or *People of the Five Nations*, series, and the translated title, *Oroshiyajin*, marks it as the Russian entry. After Japan opened several ports to Western trade around 1859, foreigners became a novelty, and print artists rushed to show their clothing, horses and manners to buyers. The print is signed Yoshitora, a name linked with Yokohama-e scenes of foreigners, although the catalog also credits Hiroshige II and III. Its color woodcut form and 1860s subject place it within that brief fashion for depicting outsiders in popular prints.
