A Dutchman carrying a telescope is the subject here, a detail that sets this sheet apart from the other nations in the series. Gountei Sadahide signed the design, Kanagaki Robun, later known for his comic fiction, wrote the text, and the carving is attributed to Hori Yasu. Dated 1861, the print appeared just as Yokohama was opening to foreign traders, when Japanese viewers were eager to see the unfamiliar Westerners arriving in their ports. The Dutch, who had long traded at Dejima, were probably the most familiar of them.
