Few sheets in this series name a head of state, and this one shows the king of Italy, Victor Emmanuel II, who had become ruler of a newly unified Italy that same year. Japanese woodblock artists produced such pictures after the ports opened to foreign trade around Yokohama in 1859, when townspeople were eager to see what the newcomers looked like. The design is by Ichieisai Yoshitsuya and the cutting by Matsushima Seikichi, and its costume details show how artists translated distant European figures for domestic viewers.
