This diptych from Nagasaki includes a distance chart that measures the world in ri, a Japanese unit of roughly 2.4 miles. Its inscriptions place England at about 11,500 ri from Japan, the "pygmy country" and "woman country" at 14,000 ri each, and the "black people country" at 75,000 ri. Nagasaki was the one port where Japan kept limited contact with Dutch and Chinese traders, and much of what Japanese knew of the outside world came through them and their books. Sheets like this one show both the curiosity of the early nineteenth century and the uneven information behind it.
