This sheet shows an American man in Western dress, shown smoking, from a series titled *People of Various Nations*. Published by Tsujiokaya in 1861 and signed by the artist Kuniaki, it belongs to a body of Yokohama prints made after the port opened to foreign trade in 1859, when Japanese printmakers began recording the newcomers' clothing and habits for a curious domestic audience. The tobacco pipe and the foreign tailoring are the details worth noticing, since together they mark the visitor as an outsider in the eyes of both artist and buyers.
