This print shows an Englishman on horseback, one of the foreign types featured in the *Gokakoku no uchi* series, whose title means "People of the Five Nations." The series dates to the early 1860s, when Japan had opened treaty ports such as Yokohama to foreign traders and diplomats, and its portraits mix curiosity with caricature. Kanagaki Robun, a writer known for popular humor, is credited with the series, and the designs are signed Yoshitora, a prolific woodblock artist of the period. The military officer on horseback is worth a closer look, as it reflects how Western uniforms and riding styles struck Japanese viewers of the time.
