Printed across three joined sheets, this woodcut shows a foreign settlement house in Yokohama, a port that opened to foreign trade in 1859 and became a novel sight for local townspeople. The record dates it to 1861 and lists two artists under the name Utagawa Hiroshige, one of whom worked in the 1860s. Its subjects include foreign visitors, lodgings, shops and street vendors, so the print records the mixed commerce that grew up around the foreign quarter. Look closely at the figures and goods to see how Japanese printmakers pictured the newcomers.
