Few subjects in early Yokohama prints were as unusual as foreigners at home with their children, and this color woodcut from 1860 depicts exactly that. Yokohama had opened to foreign trade only the year before, so Japanese publishers were eager to show the newcomers and their customs. The sheet is credited to the writer Kanagaki Robun (1829-1894), with the design signed by Issen Yoshikazu and cut by the engraver Matsushima Seikichi. Its subjects, including foreign visitors, mothers and children, and clothing, reflect the curiosity of the time.
