A woman in English riding dress, seated sidesaddle on a horse, is the figure this print singles out from the crowd of foreigners that Japanese artists of the 1860s liked to depict. The title, *Gaikokujin yūkō no zu*, translates roughly as "Foreigners Enjoying Themselves," and the sheet is signed by Utagawa Yoshitora, a designer known for pictures of the foreign settlements that opened at Yokohama after 1859. The engraving was carried out by Matsushima Seikichi, and the piece reflects the curiosity, and some of the satire, with which Japanese viewers regarded newcomers' customs such as riding and Western dress.
