English and French foreigners on horseback are the subject of this 1861 color woodcut, which shows Westerners taking up riding in Yokohama, the treaty port opened to foreign trade in 1859. It belongs to the *Gaikokujin no zu*, or *Portraits of Foreigners*, series, in which Japanese printmakers recorded the unfamiliar looks and habits of the newcomers. The record credits Kanagaki Robun as creator, with the design signed by Ichigeisai Yoshitomi and the engraving attributed to Hori Take. Prints like this were sold to a curious public and show how Japanese artists tried to make sense of the foreign residents in their midst.
