Few subjects drew Japanese printmakers of the early 1860s more than the foreign steamships that began calling after the country opened its ports in the 1850s. This sheet, titled *Gaikokujin sen no uchi: jōkisen* ("Foreigners' ship: steamship"), dates to 1861, when Yokohama was a new treaty port and such vessels were a daily sight there. It is signed Hiroshige, but the record cannot say whether Utagawa Hiroshige II or III made it. A pencilled note on the mount links it to Commodore Perry, whose visits in 1853 and 1854 began the opening, so that attribution is worth treating with caution.
