Titled *Amerikajin yuko*, roughly "An American Enjoying Himself," this Yokohama print shows a foreign visitor at a meal and drinking party with a courtesan, a scene the record files under foreigners, courtesans, and eating and drinking in Japan during the 1860s. The design is signed by Yoshitora, and the woodblock was cut by Matsushima Seikichi. Yokohama prints like this one were made after the port opened to foreign trade in 1859, when Westerners were a novelty for Japanese buyers. The picture mixes caricature with fascination, so it is worth looking at how the American is shown as both a guest and a spectacle.
