Three joined sheets show the dining saloon of an American steamship, a setting few Japanese viewers could have entered. The design is signed by Issen Yoshikazu and cut by the engraver Matsushima Seikichi, and the date of 1861 places it only two years after Yokohama opened to foreign trade. Artists in the port city produced many views of Western ships, buildings and daily life for a public eager to see unfamiliar customs. The picture is worth studying for its furnishings and seating arrangements, which record a foreign interior at a moment of intense cultural curiosity.
