This three-sheet triptych shows a balloon test carried out by the Japanese navy at Tsukiji, in Tokyo, with the American Consulate in front of which the test takes place. It places a new Western technology in the foreign quarter of a rapidly modernizing city in the early Meiji period. The sheets are signed by Yoshitora, and the record lists Kuniaki and Toyokuni among the artists, while the set came to the Library of Congress as a gift in 1930. Note the onlookers, including women and foreign visitors, gathered to watch the spectacle.
